The power of art by simon schama7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() I don't get much out of cubism, but then I am a dolt. I never cared much for some of his stuff. Quite a bit of politics in this episode, which I think is necessary to understanding Picasso's evolution as an artist. ![]() Several pieces are examined, some up close, but they seem of secondary interest to Schama. ![]() Schama concentrates as much on Picasso's personality and the historical context as he does on the art work. Like many others, he was appalled by the Condor Legion's bombing of the little Basque town of Guernica and it produced his best-known painting. He was apolitical until the Spanish Civil War of the mid-1930s when he was drawn into the conflict. He had a lot of babes too, because he was a dark-eyed, soulful-looking celebrity. Pablo Picasso made a big splash in the art world in 1920s Paris by eschewing all the subjects previously addressed by artists, the power of the nobility, the beauty of nature and of the human form. ![]()

Wind and the willows book7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() I'd definitely recommend it, a great middle-grade book. I haven't read, "The Wind in the Willows" but this book makes me want to read that book. The hardcover is a bit big, but overall I really enjoyed reading this book and looking at all the illustrations. This book definitely brings justice to that book, because this book is very enjoyable. I'm pretty sure this book is an allude to The Wind in the Willows. I loved the crazy adventures and the amazing character writing. The illustrations are incredible and detailed beyond belief. Then, there are some shenanigans with Toad and some fireworks. The hot air balloon then gets stuck in the air and the characters are forced to climb down to the ground with a rope. He invites some other characters to go in the hot air balloon, and then while flying in the air, they get shot at. This story starts with Toad flying in his hot air balloon. Together these characters go on a big, humorous, and wacky adventure. Return to the Willows is a book by Jacqueline Kelly, (who wrote the Calpurnia Tate series) and it is about the characters, Mole, Ratty, Toad, and Badger. ![]()

The gruffalo gruffalo crumble7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. ![]() I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs. “We want a song about throwing crumpled-up wrapping paper into the bin” was a typical request from the BBC. I became an expert at writing to order on such subjects as guinea pigs, window-cleaning and horrible smells. The busking led to a career in singing and songwriting, mainly for children’s television. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married.īefore Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country the best one was in Italian about pasta. A wind-up gramophone wafted out Chopin waltzes. ![]() Mary and I were always creating imaginary characters and mimicking real ones, and I used to write shows and choreograph ballets for us. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him). I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. ![]()

David chang memoir7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() While teaching English in a backwater town, he experienced the highs of his first full-blown manic episode, and began to think that the cooking and sharing of food could give him both purpose and agency in his life.įull of grace, candor, grit, and humor, Eat a Peach chronicles Chang’s switchback path. ![]() Graduating college aimless and depressed, he fled the States for Japan, hoping to find some sense of belonging. ![]() It would have been impossible to know it at the time-and certainly Chang would have bet against himself-but he, who had failed at almost every endeavor in his life, was about to become one of the most influential chefs of his generation, driven by the question, “What if the underground could become the mainstream?”Ĭhang grew up the youngest son of a deeply religious Korean American family in Virginia. Its young chef-owner, David Chang, worked the line, serving ramen and pork buns to a mix of fellow restaurant cooks and confused diners whose idea of ramen was instant noodles in Styrofoam cups.
